Talk about having the weight of the world on your shoulders. As if it’s not bad enough being 13 years old, having just moved into a new house with a mom recently remarried, and adjusting to having a new stepsister. Add to that, strange noises coming from the attic. Sounds of walking, things being shuffled around, all in a room that is supposed to be deserted. And the feeling of being watched constantly, even when there is no one around. This is where Melissa finds herself, and about to enter an adventure that would scare away even the hardiest of adults.

It seems that there are two ghosts in residence in her new home. One is Josh, a friendly spirit wandering freely about the house. He was the son of one of the servants that once lived there who wants the truth to be known about how he died. The other is William, a nasty malevolent apparition who, thankfully, is confined to the attic-for now. He wants out and makes no qualms about his desires for being free of his confinement. It’s up to Melissa to reveal the truth of Josh’s demise so he can rest in peace, and find a way to make sure that William stays confined.

In her second novel, author TJ Perkins has managed to create a story that captivates and compels the reader into the adventures of Melissa and her stepsister Becky as they tries to unravel the mystery. Her writing is clear, crisp and written with such genuine care for the subject and the characters that you can’t help but be drawn in. I found that with my own child, it kept her interested, and was not a chore for her to finish; she enjoyed it from cover to cover, as did I. Add to this that the author writes from her own experiences when she was 13, and this makes for a gripping tale that is near to impossible to put down once you start.

I hope there are more books to come from the mind of TJ Perkins, and I for one, will be reading them as quick as I can get my hands on them.
